When the National Curriculum was released in 2014, it explained what phonemes (sounds) and words should be introduced in each academic year e.g. Year 1, Year 2.

The handwriting board provides a fantastic opportunity for children to practise these recommended words and sounds.

For example, the image below shows a Year 3 expectation to be able to add the suffix ‘–ation’ to verbs (doing words) to make them nouns (naming words).

For example, information, adoration, sensation, preparation, admiration.

You and your child could challenge one another to see how many words you can write in joined handwriting on the whiteboard that ‘fit’ a National Curriculum expectation?
